Best Beaches in San José del Cabo for Families

Not every beach in Los Cabos is a swimming beach — a lot of the Pacific-facing coastline has serious undertow, and that matters a lot more when you've got kids with you. Here's where families actually go in the water.

Playa Palmilla. This is the safest, most consistently calm beach in the San José del Cabo area, protected by a rock point that breaks up the surf. It's the beach locals recommend for young kids, with generally gentle water and enough shade and shoreline to spread out.

Costa Azul. Better suited to older kids and teens — it's a well-known surf break, so the water has more energy than Palmilla. Good for a family with a mix of ages where the adults or older kids want to try a surf lesson while younger ones play closer to shore.

The San José del Cabo estuary and Malecón. Not a swimming beach, but worth the walk — it's a protected wetland with birdwatching and a paved walkway along the water, an easy low-key stop if you need a break from sun and sand.

A quick safety note. Much of the open coastline between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas has strong currents and isn't safe for casual swimming, regardless of how calm it looks. When in doubt, stick to beaches with visible lifeguard presence or ask locally before letting kids swim.
